The movie Miracle, directed by Gavin O’Connor, is a true story about a hockey team doing the impossible. Miracle takes place in 1980 when the Olympics are coming to the United states. It also takes place right in the middle of the cold war. Everything is tense between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. The Olympic games in N.Y., is a chance to beat the Soviets and show them that the U.S. is better than them at everything. One sport no one is counting on is men’s hockey. The Soviet hockey team was undefeated and had beat the U.S. team in an exhibition game 10-3 proving that there was no chance for the Americans. Even though the Americans knew their chances were slim they still fought through the group play to get points to move on to the medal round. The first medal round game was against the none other than the Soviet Union. The head coach of the U.S. team came into the locker-room before the game, feeling the belief in the room, he delivered on the most motivational speeches in sports history. The U.S. team came out with fire in their hearts and the prize on their minds. In the end they fought harder than any team has ever fought before and did the impossible and beat the Soviets to advance on to win a gold medal. The line that still gives me shivers from that movie is “Do you believe in miracles? YES!!”- Al Michaels. The Americans easily went on to win the gold medal and prove to everyone everywhere that anything is possible. I might be a little biased to the movie because I am a hockey player. I was practically born watching this movie but I think it is an important part of history to know. The other reason I love this movie so much is because of Herb Brooks. He was from Minnesota, where I’m from, and seeing his statue in front of the X-Cel Energy Centre before every Wild game reminds me that I can do anything I put my mind to.
