An American Problem

The film “Selma” is a movie about Martin Luther King jr. and his fight for civil rights. In the movie his next fight is Selma where African Americans are denied the right to vote because they have to go through a series of unnecessary tests to see if they’re actually “American citizens” and are evaluated by white people who already don’t want them to vote. MKL jr organizes a march from Selma to the capital of Alabama in protest. The first march does not work because state troopers, cops on horseback, and racist white Alabamans are waiting at the end of the bridge to not let them through. They throw tear gas at them and beat up innocent African Americans. When they try a second march MKL jr calls on all sorts of people from all around the U.S who are sick of what is happening in America to join the fight. People from all over America, from all different backgrounds answer his call and they all march together lead by MKL jr. When they get to the bridge the cops and state troopers disperse from blocking the bridge. When this happens MKL jr gets on his knee and prays and then gets up and walks away later explaining that he would rather have everyone upset at him for not proceeding on with the march rather than another slaughter like the previous march. Later in the movie MLK jr realizes the only way this march is going to happen is if they go to court. They win the court case and march from Selma to the capital and MKL jr gives a speech right on the front steps. I enjoyed the film because it focused on multiple characters from multiple backgrounds and all of their struggles. It showed the white pastor who was beaten and killed for coming down to march with MLK jr which proved that you didn’t have to be African American to be associated with the fight for civil rights. That part made me the most upset because it proved that people were not concerned with human life if they could kill whoever whenever they wanted. I cringed a little bit watching this film while I watched innocent people being beaten to near death because of their skin color. Everyone should be treated equal and given a chance to show you that they’re good people until they do something that would prove otherwise. The world we live in now is so divided between people and I hope we can all come together and love one another.

My personality through music
I’ve always been a weird child because when people would ask me what my favorite genera of music is I would never be able to give them an answer. “I like all kind of music” I would say and they never believed me. They would go through all the genera’s asking me to name a song that I like in it. My phone on shuffle can go from rock to classical and it wouldn’t even phase me. Throughout the years I have started to listening to some genera’s more than others but I still get around. While listening to music I have found a few songs that I can listen to all the time and they describe me or I relate to them. The first song that comes from the alternative/rock genera. Sixteen Saltines by Jack White is all about chaos in the work and all the chaotic things that happen. With my outgoing personality and non-sealant attitude I am all chaos. The second song on my list is Diva by Beyoncé. This pop song describes a small part of me that only seem to come out when I play hockey, my sassy, take nothing from no one attitude. Sticking with the pop genera the next song is by Miley Cyrus called Do My Thang. I like to be who I am. I don’t like people or society to tell who I am. I will do what I want and have my crazy personality till the day I die. My country side loves the song Home Grown by The Zac Brow Band. This song reminds me of my home every time I listen to it. I love my family and the familiarity of home. The last song on my list can be put into either the pop or alternative genera. It’s the song Adventure of a Lifetime by Cold Play. The song reminds me of all the adventures I’ve taken throughout my life. My playlist is all over the place with genera’s which helps people see more about how crazy I am. I am not an easy person to read because I am always changing or hiding something people don’t know about me.

I am, and always be, a very optimistic person. I’ve always believed there is something larger than us here and I think my playlist reflects that. Although I am optimistic I know life is short and that “something larger” will come up faster than you expect. My playlist shows that I am willing to go out and try everything I can before it’s too late. I don’t want to have any regrets when I’m lying on my death bed. I never expected to like country until I listened to it and now I listen to it often. This shows that if you try something new and take a risk it might just pay off in the end, and if it doesn’t then you can avoid it for the future. Always try new things and live your life to the fullest.

Miracle on ice

The movie Miracle, directed by Gavin O’Connor, is a true story about a hockey team doing the impossible. Miracle takes place in 1980 when the Olympics are coming to the United states. It also takes place right in the middle of the cold war. Everything is tense between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. The Olympic games in N.Y., is a chance to beat the Soviets and show them that the U.S. is better than them at everything. One sport no one is counting on is men’s hockey. The Soviet hockey team was undefeated and had beat the U.S. team in an exhibition game 10-3 proving that there was no chance for the Americans. Even though the Americans knew their chances were slim they still fought through the group play to get points to move on to the medal round. The first medal round game was against the none other than the Soviet Union. The head coach of the U.S. team came into the locker-room before the game, feeling the belief in the room, he delivered on the most motivational speeches in sports history. The U.S. team came out with fire in their hearts and the prize on their minds. In the end they fought harder than any team has ever fought before and did the impossible and beat the Soviets to advance on to win a gold medal. The line that still gives me shivers from that movie is “Do you believe in miracles? YES!!”- Al Michaels. The Americans easily went on to win the gold medal and prove to everyone everywhere that anything is possible. I might be a little biased to the movie because I am a hockey player. I was practically born watching this movie but I think it is an important part of history to know. The other reason I love this movie so much is because of Herb Brooks. He was from Minnesota, where I’m from, and seeing his statue in front of the X-Cel Energy Centre before every Wild game reminds me that I can do anything I put my mind to.
