A Raisin in the Sun is a play about personal conflict and hard decisions. Each character in the play experiences conflict with themselves and other characters. Lena is expecting an insurance check for 10,000 because of the death of her husband. She doesn't want to fuss about the money because she thinks it is not a big deal. Her son Walter Lee wants to use the money to buy a liquor store with his buddy. No one he has talked to has believed in his dream and this upsets him because he thinks no one has faith in him. Walter Lees wife Ruth doesn't want her husband or her child to have anything to do with that check because she says its mamas. Walter Lees sister says she doesn't want anything to do with the check but she secretly wants it to go towards her medical school because it is expensive. Mama decides to make a down payment on a house in Clybourne Park. Ruth is ecstatic to hear that she will be movie out of their small apartment but Walter lee is furious. Later on mama decides to give Walter Lee the rest of the insurance check. He gives in to his buddies to open a liquor store but he skips town with the money. Everyone was hesitant to move to Clybourne park because it was all white folks and a man came to their apartment telling them that they would by the house for them above what they paid for it. in the end of the play Walter was about to sign the agreement but then decided that the Youngers are a strong proud family and wont be giving up something they want just because of their race.
